Colocasia esculenta 'Fontanesii'
Elephant Ear. A great architectural plant that will make any garden have a tropical feel with large glossy green leaves with a tinge of purple. These will get up to 90cm long and 60cm wide . This is one of the hardier varieties and will regenerate from a root tuber once large enough if left to get too cold in the winter. They like a semi shade position and moist soil. They will tolerate being grown in a bog garden and I have even grown in a pond where it has over wintered in Cornwall. They will produce aroid like yellow flowers during the summer but can be easily missed due to the large leaves. The leaves are held up by thick black stems which are fantastic as colour and structure and can tolerate a reasonable amount of wind.
